Synopsis
Let’s face it. Every year we make new goals or resolutions and plan to nail them. The reality is that most of the time, they are forgotten by March or April. There are several books and ideas surrounding the area of goal setting and MANIFESTING these goals. Experts at Yale studied written goals and found that people that wrote (or visualized) their goals not only achieved them, but also earned three times more than their peers who didn’t write them down.
The nerd in me would be mad if I didn’t mention that whatever you download into your reticular activating system is what you will believe to be true. In layman’s terms, that just means even if it’s not true, when you visualize it, you believe it. Straight. Like. That.
OK. Here’s What You Do
Now that we know why we should do this, let’s get into what to do to make this a fun project and party!
Write Down Your Goals
Like really write them down on paper. Something happens when you transfer words to paper from your brain. There are seven areas you should make goals according to Zig Ziglar.
- Career
- Financial
- Spiritual
- Physical
- Intellectual
- Family
- Social
You should make a goal for each of these. I ended up leaving one out because I couldn’t remember. The crazy thing is your girl made one for the 7th anyway 💪🏾.
At work, we are told that our GOALS should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Relevant and Time-Bound). Keep that same energy at home. Set goals you can actually achieve. That’s not to say they won’t stretch or challenge you.
Gather Supplies
You’ll need a few supplies. Most of them are around your home. If not, I’ll share where you can get the items for the low or free!
- Your written goals (Free.99)
- A poster board or old frame (the bigger the better) – check Hobby Lobby or Michaels for clearance frames. I found the ones we used at Hobby Lobby for $1.49!
- Magazines or printed images from you computer – Head over to Half Price Books. They have magazines from $1 – $2 each. Keep in min that every store has different inventory and pricing. Also ask family members. My aunt gave me a HUGE stack for the free because I asked.
- Scissors – Dollar Tree (pro tip: after back to school, you can get a lot of supplies for the low. Just hang on to it until you’re ready to host a party)
- Glue – Walmart (see above pro tip)
Bonus: Paint and glitter – if your frames are old or don’t match your decor, you can paint them. Glitter … makes everything better. You knew this already.
Get Started
Since you have your goals written down, the next part is pretty easy. Using all of the photos you’ve gathered and images from the magazines, create word pictures of your goals. If there is an image that represents a goal, clip it out and set it to the side.
Can’t find the word or phrase you’re looking for? Think ransom letters. Don’t kidnap anyone, but feel free to piece together letters or phrases to make the words or sayings you’re looking for.
Use the back of the stock paper in the frame as your base. I’m not a fan of white space, so I usually find colorful spreads or full page images that get rid of it and then lay out my images on top of it. (We had a mix of both at my party and they were all equally beautiful. Check out the final products below).
After I have mapped out where I want everything, I start the process of gluing all of my photos, word and graphics down. Once it’s all glued/ taped down, put the paper in the frame and hang it where you will see it regularly.
Get Fancy
Now I mentioned this could be a party too. I was invited to a vision board party and had so much fun. After that experience, I decided I should replicate it for my circle too.
First, set out a space for everyone to work. I used plastic tablecloths that I had left over from other parties.
Next, put containers out for scraps (mine were plastic cups) and paper plates or baskets for everyone to collect the things they cut out (these were cups and baskets I picked up from HEB last summer during their clearance for $0.22/3).
Last, put supplies out for everyone to grab so that they can work. Since our frames were wood, I provided paint to spice them up if they wanted.
Invite Your Friends Over
All you have left to do is set out some snacks and ask your talented friends to bring some too.
Then you can enjoy some real adult crafting! Here are some of the boards that were made. They did such an awesome job!
Actionable Items
- Look out for deals on frames ( I’m pretty sure if you frame your dreams, you’ll hang them)
- Save pictures any time they speak to you on your phone or even from a brochure
- Use any stickers or craft supplies you have to work on your board.
- Set a date and make it happen (really)
- Pray over the visions. I’ve shared the prayer I made to pray over our boards below.
Point of it all
There are couple of things I know for sure.
- Any time I write down a goal, it’s more real
- If I aim for nothing, that’s exactly what I get
- When I share that goal, I am held accountable
- If I make a visual, it’s pretty much a done deal
- Manifesting things in my life is a result of what I focus on and work for
Are you going to make a vision board or host a vision board party? I’d love to hear what you guys come up with. Feel free to leave comments sharing your goals or your ideas for your vision board party!
